Pipes 102: Metal pipes in your Decatur, Alabama Community

In our last post, we talked about the various types of plastic pipes you could find or use in your home or commercial property. When considering what type to use, you should also consider metal pipes. There are a variety of options available, and the qualified technicians at Lamco Plumbing would be happy to help you decide which option is best for your Decatur, Alabama home and business. Today, we would like to provide you with a little more information on the types of metal pipes that have been used in the past and what’s most common today.

Cast Iron

The most uncommon type of metal pipe is Cast Iron. Cast Iron pipes are uncommon because they are very heavy and difficult to work with. They were most commonly used for drainage. If you have cast iron pipes in your home and they require replacements, you can work with PVC pipes to replace the damaged sections without completely having to re-pipe your home. Before deciding what is best, give Lamco a call so that we can assess the problem and offer a variety of solutions.

Stainless Steel

Next, Stainless Steel is also a less common style of pipe in homes. Stainless steel pipes are strong and highly resistant to corrosion, but even more expensive than copper pipes. They’re most frequently used in marine environments where salt water would erode other metal pipes.

Galvanized Steel

The two most common types of metal pipes are Galvanized Steel and Copper. Galvanized steel pipes are made of heavy metal and have been used in plumbing for many decades to carry both hot and cold water to homes. Most commonly, they are buried underground to supply water outside the house. With its galvanized coating, these pipes are naturally resistant to corrosion, but they are not entirely rust-proof. They tend to rust fairly easily along the threaded ends where the coating has been cut away. Galvanized pipe is still present inside homes in North Alabama and should be replaced by a professional. When galvanized pipe corrode due to the high ph of water lead and cadmium can leech into the water and cause serious health problems. If you have galvanized pipes you should at least have your water tested and consider removing the galvanized pipes.

Copper

Finally, Copper pipes are one of the most common metal pipes. Unfortunately, they are also very expensive and susceptible to theft from department stores, which drives the cost even higher in some areas. Copper pipes are attractive because they have a high resistance to corrosion and tolerance of heat, so copper is ideal in both hot and cold applications and have less pipe leaks. In addition, because it is usually connected using soldered fittings, the fittings become permanent additions, and don’t often come loose.

Lead

Lead piping is no longer used. But if you work, reside, or play in a structure that was built before 1986 it may have lead pipes. Lead causes serious health problems, especially in children. It is important to get your water quality tested for lead if you suspect or are unsure if lead pipes or parts have been used. A trained technician from Lamco Plumbing would gladly test your water for lead and takes this testing very seriously.
